How a Storage Rental Helps Your Home Business

Lately I'm seeing more people take control of their finances and get into home-based businesses. Some may offer professional services, while others freelance from home. Still others apply a skill or trade to create product to sell. I find it very admirable that somebody is willing to start a business from scratch and handle every aspect of it - it's something I've toyed with doing for years. I know when you hang up your own shingle, you have to create a workplace that suits you, but you may need other resources to get started. Renting a storage may be helpful for people who work on their own.

Now, a storage unit can come in handy if your home business involves some kind of retail and shipping process. Whether you make jarred fruit preserves, clothing, art, or anything put up for sale on eBay or Etsy, you have product. You have to have enough pre-made to satisfy an inventory and demand. Where are you going to put everything? If your home only has enough space to hold your products - not to mention the supplies you'll buy to make everything - it may get cramped.

In this case, renting from a storage facility makes sense. You can arrange for your materials and finished product to be places in a dry, clean environment. As you receive orders, you can handle fulfillment directly from the unit. This way your home workshop is not cluttered with stuff you don't need at the moment, and you'll feel less stressed because there is no clutter.

It's important to note, too, that any expenses incurred in your home business may be tax deductible. If you aren't sure you can write off a storage rental, talk to an accountant or tax professional. Save all paperwork if you do rent one.

Another use for storage: if you want to clear space at home for your workshop, take what furniture and household items you don't use and put that into storage. That way you're not competing for elbow room with a surfboard you can't use in the winter.

Renting a storage unit as part of your home business plan is a good way to maintain organization of your product and raw materials. If you live near a such a facility, ask them about the various unit sizes available. You may not need to rent a garage-sized space, but enough room to put your handmade items can definitely help.
